Introducing Our New Serve Desk!

As a church, we know that there are many needs. There are needs by members of our church, but there are also needs in our local community. We wanted to try and find a way to create a culture where we not only become aware of those needs, but also are faithfully facilitating the opportunity for everyone to play a role in serving one another and our community.
1 Peter 4:10 (ESV) says, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” That means that part of the role of the church is to help our members discover and use their gifts to serve! So we created the SERVE DESK in order to have a dedicated space to share and collect service needs. We're not interested in bullying or guilting anyone into serving, but being a disciple of Christ and serving go hand in hand.
The people who followed Christ served Him, His people, and others. Peter's mother-in-law is a great example of this in Mark 1:30-31 says, "30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he [Jesus] came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them." We are a church that wants to do the same!
1 Peter 4:10 (ESV) says, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
How Does It Work?
It is incredibly simple. If you attend New Beginnings Baptist Church, we'll remind you in the announcements to stop by the SERVE DESK to either share a need or sign up to serve by meeting a need. You can also always write down a need on one of the cards in the pew and place it in an offering plate.
At the desk, we'll have a computer and screen where you can see and select from a list of needs we have on a spreadsheet. We'll type in your name and at minimum a day/time estimate of when you are available to meet the need. Later in the week, we'll send your preferred reminder (email or text message) of your commitment and update the spreadsheet as needs are met.
How Do We Find Out About Serving the Local Community?
While we can't possibly promise to meet every need, Pastor Nick will happily receive email requests submitted for local serve opportunities (raking leaves, moving furniture, a ride, etc). Remember, we are a small church, so while we also would like to and will occasionally help with a financial need, that will be much harder for us to do. Financial needs also need to go through a vetting process because we want to be good stewards of the limited financial resources we have. For service needs we'll also be faithfully inquiring through our network of ministries and our church member's neighbors of how we can be a blessing through service!
We hope that the SERVE DESK will be a great step towards building a church culture of serving like Christ served. Because remember, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
